Rec District 1 kicks off fundraising effort Saturday

"What better way to kick off our official fundraising effort than to have the kids — those who will benefit — participate?" asked Mike Gill of the Washington Parish Council.

Gill and his wife, Betty, are co-fundraising chairs for Washington Parish Recreation District No. 1 and at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Washington Parish Fairgrounds, the effort will kick into high gear. The event will last until 2 p.m. and is themed "Building Our Children's Future Now."

"We've been fortunate to raise some money up to now," Gill said, "but this is our kickoff and we're hoping for a large turnout to help us get started."

Awards will be presented to all Dixie Youth Baseball and Franklinton Girls Softball players. After the awards are presented, free hot dogs and drinks will be available, as well as inflatable jumpers and water slides to attract youth who might not have been part of a team. Players are asked to wear their jerseys and swimsuits so they can enjoy the water inflatables.

A brief presentation from the Recreation District will be made on main stage before the awards are handed out, pledge cards will be available and pledges and donations will be accepted.

"We're not going to take much more than five minutes," Gill said. "We're talking about kids and we want them to enjoy their day ... the adults can take care of our business quickly."

The Recreation District’s fundraising efforts are being held to assist in building a new recreation complex for the youth and citizens of all ages. Washington Parish businessman Leeke Magee has said he will match all money that is donated before the end of 2011 up to a total of $150,000. If that goal is reached, the district will be eligible to receive matching funds from the Department of the Interior.
