Mt. Hermon Garden Club installs 2011-2012 officers



The Mt. Hermon Garden Club held its June meeting at the Mt. Hermon Rurtian Club to install newly elected officers for 2011-2012.  Minnie Posey, of Franklinton, president of the Washington Parish Garden Club Council, installed incoming officers with an installation entitled, "For The Birds.” Each officer was given a selected bird by Posey representing their office. Antioch Missionary Baptist to screen 'Left Behind'







The movie, 'Left Behind' will be shown at 7 p.m. Friday as the first in the series of Antioch Baptist Church's free monthly movie nights. Antioch is located at the end of Borgne Avenue and Bennett Road.

Left Behind is a Christian based film released in 2000 and starring Kirk CameronBrad JohnsonGordon Currie and Clarence Gilyard. Left Behind was proclaimed by its creators as the biggest and most ambitious Christian film ever made. It is based on the Left Behind book series by Tim LaHaye and also the first in a trilogy, followed by Left Behind II: Tribulation Force and Left Behind: World at War. The MPAA rated the filmPG-13 for violence. A remake for the entire series is currently in progress by Cloud Ten Pictures.

The church's movies nights are open to the public.

Help Center chooses new officers, directors to lead

"It's easy to smile when someone cares."

That is the motto of the Bogalusa Help Center, which has been helping folks in need of food for more than 24 years.

The Help Center recently held elections for officers and directors for the coming year.

Recently elected officers and directors include Gene Hayman, president; Patricia Branch, vice president; Rev. Theodore Newman, secretary; Ila Pittman, treasurer and June Rayburn, assistant secretary.

Additionally, a group of new volunteer directors — including Russell Kersey, Kitty Baker, and Patty Thigpen — have joined old timers Joyce Puckett, Charles Grosche, Jim Breland, Peggy Breland, Joan Hortman, Elnora Dubb, Sedonia Sorrell, and Paul Morris.

The directors are the workers who meet each Wednesday to distribute foods to over 500 families who come to the Help Center for assistance each month.

All the food is provided by area donors,  "who truly care".

Cassidy Park Museums: Archery Club for youth, ongoing exhibits for adults

The Cassidy Park Indian Museum sponsors an archery club for youngsters between the ages of 12 and 18 and meets on the first and third Saturday mornings monthly throughout the summer.

Emphasis is on the historical aspect of the bow and arrow and the role it played in human development. Attending a recent session were Jason Stewart, Taylon Pritchard, and Alex Estera, along with instructor Hunter Thomas.

In addition to educational activities for youth, the Museums of Bogalusa, including Tte Pioneer Museum, offers something for everyone.

Currently on display is an exhibit of artifacts telling the stories of Lee's Creek and Jenkinsville, which is now known as Rio.

Among the activities was a "Remember When" gathering, where old timers swapped tales of yore about the days when Lee's Creek and Rio were "big" settlements. Some of those attending included Russ Williams (historian), Millie Canter director), Judy Pritchard, Melene Baughman, James Culpepper, Huey Pierce, Rita Clayton, Cidette Rayburn, Lundie Sanders and Margeret Ryals.

Gardening Week observed in Franklinton, Washington Parish

FRANKLINTON — ­Home and Garden Club members met at Franklinton City Hall  this week to have Washington Parish President Richard Thomas and Franklinton Mayor Wayne Fleming sign a proclamation promoting National Gardening Week, which began Sunday and ends Saturday.

National Gardening Week was further celebrated by presenting

Club member Dana Truxillo presented a lovely sunflower design to Fleming, while Thomas received vegetables from club member Janet Baham's garden and Fleming received a basket of vegetables from Truxillo's garden.  To further promote Gardening Week, each town employee was presented a basket of cherry tomatoes from the Truxillo garden. Minnie Posey made a design using corn, bell peppers and squash and green ivy to be placed at the library to promote Gardening Week in the entire parish and town of Franklinton.

The proclamation reads: “Whereas Gardeners have a passion for nurturing the beauty and resources of the earth through the planting of seeds, the care of all plants and the riches of their efforts; and whereas, Gardeners seek to add beauty, splendor, fragrance and nutrition to our lives through the growing of herbs, vegetables, foliage and flowers; and whereas Gardeners work to preserve our country's traditional spirit of independence and initiative through innovation and hard work; and whereas, Gardeners advocate the importance of all creatures, large and small, that share our world and their roles in a balanced and productive ecology; and whereas, Gardening furnishes a challenging and productive activity for many citizens, for those just learning as well as those having years of experience ; and Whereas Gardening promotes a healthy lifestyle that last a lifetime, helps reduce stress from other areas of our life, teaches that rewards can come from diligent efforts; and Whereas, Gardening enables members of Garden Clubs across the nation and the world to serve others in the communities where they reside and work;  Now, Therefore Be It Resolved that in an effort to acknowledge the importance of Gardening and the numerous contribution of Gardeners, Washington Parish President Richard Thomas, Mayor Wayne Fleming of Franklinton, Home and Garden Club President, Nellie Jenkins and the National Garden Clubs, Inc. president, Renee D. Blaschke designates the week of June 5 – 11, 2011 as National Garden Week.”

Parish garden club members attend district meeting
On Wednesday, Washington Parish Garden Club members attended the District VI President's Meeting held in Ponchatoula on the Memorial Festival Grounds.  Members had time to visit and share ideas about their club projects and meet new Director Diane Dufour. The new theme for District VI Garden Club Federation is "Everything in District VI Booms.” Attendees included (from left) Martha Pierce and Margaret Ryals of Bogalusa Garden Guild Garden Club; Minnie Posey, outgoing District VI Director who served 2009 - 2011 and is a member of Home and Garden Club; Rachel Lanford, representing President, Susan McNeese of Mt. Hermon Garden Club and Jackie Smith, also a member of Mt. Hermon Garden Club and the Franklinton Garden Club, serving as President. Posey is also president of the Washington Parish Garden Club Council, Fair Flower House chairman and state chairman of Flower Show School, Symposium, and Credentials for Louisiana Garden Club Federation, Inc. and serves as second vice president of the Louisiana Judges Council.
